RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment)

RYPEN is a supervised residential weekend seminar designed for personal and social development. It introduces participants to new challenges, cultural perspectives, and team-building activities.

At our recent RYPEN camp:

  • Career advisors shared insights into job applications and employer expectations.
  • Guest speakers discussed personal values, teamwork, and resilience, with inspiring examples like Orange Sky Laundry founders.
  • Paralympians shared motivational advice, encouraging attendees to "set no limits."
  • Activities included ropes courses and team exercises emphasising collaboration and critical thinking.

Our Rotary Club of Kingston proudly sponsors youth to attend RYPEN and assists with event catering at The Lea, a 137-hectare conservation area near Kingston.

By investing in these programs, we aim to shape the next generation of leaders and contribute to a stronger, more connected community.

 Youth Exchange Program

The Rotary Youth Exchange Program (YEP) is an international exchange initiative designed for young people aged 15 to 18 years. It offers participants a life-changing opportunity to immerse themselves in a new culture, develop lifelong skills, and become global citizens.

How the Program Works

  • Duration: The exchange lasts for 12 months.
  • Host Families: Each student stays with **3–4 host families** during their exchange, experiencing different lifestyles and gaining diverse cultural insights.
  • Exchange Numbers: Up to 15 students are exchanged annually between participating countries.
  • Sponsorship: Local Rotary clubs sponsor the students, providing support and ensuring a safe and enriching experience.

Benefits of the Program

  • Cultural Understanding: Living with host families and attending school in a foreign country provides a deep cultural exchange.
  • Personal Growth: Participants develop independence, confidence, and adaptability.
  • Language Skills: Students often learn or improve fluency in a new language.
  • Global Connections: Participants form lifelong friendships and professional networks around the world.

Host Families

The role of host families is essential in the success of YEP. Families provide accommodation, meals, and emotional support to the students. In return, they gain a rich cultural exchange experience by learning about the student’s home country and traditions.

Application Process

1. Contact a Local Rotary Club: Interested students should contact their nearest Rotary club to begin the application process.
2. Interviews and Selection: Applicants go through interviews to ensure their suitability and readiness for the program.
3. Orientation: Once selected, participants attend orientation sessions to prepare for their exchange.

Rotary’s Support

Rotary ensures that each exchange is safe, well-organized, and educational. Clubs in the host and home countries collaborate to provide guidance and address any issues that arise during the exchange.

After the Exchange

Many participants and host families maintain strong connections long after the exchange ends. Alumni often credit YEP with shaping their careers and broadening their worldview.

Why Join YEP?

The Youth Exchange Program is more than just a travel opportunity—it’s a chance to become a goodwill ambassador, gain new perspectives, and develop skills that will last a lifetime.
